The Nervous System Is

Made Up Of Two Primary Branches

The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)

Known as your “fight or flight” response, this part of your nervous system activates when you’re under stress or perceiving danger. It gives you energy to move, act, protect, perform, and push forward.

But when your SNS is always “on” — even when there’s no real threat — you may feel:

  • Anxious or hyper-alert
  • Restless or unable to slow down
  • Wired but tired
  • Overwhelmed by small things
  • Chronically tense, irritated, or reactive
The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)

This is your “rest and restore” mode. It governs digestion, recovery, deep breathing, and your ability to feel calm, present, and connected. It helps your body repair and recharge.

When you’re stuck too deep in the PNS without balance, you may feel:

  • Numb, detached, or disconnected from emotion
  • Frozen or shut down
  • Low energy or unmotivated
  • Unable to move forward or take action—even when you want to
  • Spiritually or emotionally flat

Regulation Is About Rhythmic Balance — Not Living in One State

A healthy, resilient nervous system isn’t always calm or always activated—it’s adaptable.

What Is a Nervous System Reset Through Breathwork?

There is a lot of talk about demonizing our fight or flight state [sympathetic nervous system], but in reality, just as many humans are chronically set in their parasympathetic nervous system. The goal is to be able to move in and out of these states with ease.

And here’s where it gets good. You can’t ‘think’ your way into adaptability and resilience, you need to rewire your nervous system. That’s where breathwork is powerful.

Laura is a Chiropractor, Breathwork Facilitator, Personal Leadership Coach, Yoga Teacher, and Experience Maker with over 28 years of experience helping individuals regulate their nervous systems and step into their fullest potential.

As a Chiropractor at The Healing Space in the Costa Rican jungle, Laura specializes in nervous system regulation, using specific and gentle adjustments to attune the body’s tone and vibration.
